Opportunities for Writers
In the age of generative AI and dwindling attention spans, writers need support more than ever. From the Hand is committed to building infrastructure to help provide that support for writers of all ages and styles, with a distinct long-term goal of supporting emerging writers.
Contests
In 2026, From the Hand offered the first annual personal essay contest, awarding one writer a $100 award and publication in From the Hand’s Substack.
Additional contests are in the works, including a poetry contest, slated for spring 2027 to coincide with National Poetry Month in April. To stay up to date with contest announcements, subscribe to From the Hand on Substack.
Residencies
From the Hand is currently in the planning phase of developing an annual writing residency program. The program will award one applicant an honorarium to complete work tied to the theme of that year’s residency, with the opportunity to publish segments of the residency work on From the Hand.
We hope to open applications for the residency in 2027. All updates and announcements regarding the residency will be made via Substack. Subscribe there to stay informed.
Submit Your Work
From the Hand reviews submissions of poetry and essays on a rolling basis. Accepted submissions receive a $25 award and publication on Substack. For more details on requirements and to submit your work, click below.
